In 2019 State law enacted Covered California to automatically enroll consumers in a qualified health plan when they lose Medi-Cal coverage and gain eligibility for advanced premium tax credits or subsidies. After an implementation delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting public health emergency (PHE).
Individuals may be at risk of becoming disenrolled from Medi-Cal due to administrative and procedural barriers, like Medi-Cal eligibility officers not having beneficiaries’ current contact information, including phone numbers and addresses, after the last two years.
In order to keep Medi-Cal coverage, beneficiaries need to login to their accounts to make sure that their personal information is updated. Personal information includes addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses that are current. Make sure to check the mailbox, counties will mail a physical letter about eligibility, where beneficiaries may need to complete a renewal form. Should a beneficiary lose medi-cal they will get reffered to Covered California automatically. Covered California will begin its auto-enrollment program for consumers transitioning from Medi-Cal beginning June 2023 with a July 1st effective date. Covered California’s program will ensure that consumers losing Medi-Cal will not experience a gap in coverage if they effectuate their coverage within a month of disenrollment from Medi-Cal.
